Saturday Night Live: The Experience is coming to Chicago! The 500-artifact museum exhibition, which was previously stationed in New York City last year, will be on display for 14 months at Chicago’s Museum of Broadcast Communications beginning on October 21st.
The exhibit contains decades of history from the beloved New York City mainstay. Chris Farley’s Matt Foley costume, Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri’s Spartan cheerleading outfits, Dana Carvey’s church lady dress, Justin Timberlake’s “Dick in a box” getup, complete with crotch-attached gift box, the Wayne’s World basement and so much more can be experienced up close and personal in this unprecedented look at the vast collection of artifacts from SNL’s past. In addition to the costumes and set pieces on display, attendees can also check out video interviews from writers and players, past and current, giving behind-the-scenes looks at the all of the turning cogs that help the weekly production go down smoothly.
The goal of the exhibit is not only to provide a history of one of broadcast’s most long-standing shows, but to also demonstrate how important the creativity of Chicago’s comedy scene was to SNL’s success. The exhibit’s layout provides a running narrative that shows the close ties between the NYC establishment and Chicago’s sketch/improv comedy scene; many of SNL’s biggest stars, like John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Chris Farley and more, were alumni of Chicago’s Second City theater, and were integral to the success of the show, a proud legacy for the Windy City.
“It’s a story that we want to tell,” said museum president/CEO Bruce DuMont. “The museum’s mission has always been to remind people that significant things were nurtured in Chicago or produced here.”
Tickets went on sale Friday for $25, and can be purchased at the http://snltheexperience.com (exhibit’s website). You can check out a glimpse of the tour in the video below:
